Optimization of Workplace in Health Care Business Occupancies (completed)
A quasi-experimental study was conducted to evaluate design innovations that aimed to increase staff satisfaction and retention, improve health and social interactions, produce operational savings, and reduce financial complications that can result from a poorly designed space. The effects of innovative workplace designs on different generations of workers were also rigorously evaluated to inform workplace design optimization. Results will be shared on national conferences and journals.

Measuring Performance in Patient Room Design: A Study of Design Strategies and Health Outcomes at the BJC Campus Renewal Project (in progress)
The objective of this research investigation is to study the correlation between specific design strategies and intended outcomes. This begins by identifying the hypothesis that links a design feature with intended consequences, and then testing that hypothesis by measuring the degree of effectiveness in the built environment. The study will support the collection of data and research that yields four metric-based conclusions. Results will contribute to findings and knowledge in the health care industry, and help identify opportunities for the next generation of inpatient room design.

Creating Ambulatory Surgical Environment for Efficiency, Safety, and Patient Experience (in progress)
The physical environment is critically important for the efficient and safe delivery of ambulatory surgical care that meets or exceeds the expectations of patients and families. The purpose of the project is to develop a set of environment design and evaluation metrics to support continuous design optimization of ambulatory surgical care. A set of high-impact design metrics for ambulatory surgical environments will be developed through extensive review of research evidence and evaluation of existing facilities, and tested by comparing multiple facility designs in relation to key efficiency, safety, and patient experience outcome measures.
